COCHRANE, AB / ACCESSWIRE / November 19, 2018 / On Saturday, November 24, 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Final Touch Art Studio, Helping Families Handle Cancer will be hosting their first ever Helping Families Art Exhibit to help Cochrane families who are struggling to make ends meet at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
It’s a night of discovering local artists, in and around the Cochrane and Calgary area. This is a chance to own a unique masterpiece, creations from oil, ink, and acrylic paintings, to beautiful photography, while making a difference in the lives of families in the community. Artwork is sold on a first-come-first-serve basis.
There is also a silent auction, featuring local businesses, and the chance to own a „live“ painting by Sharon Kulhavy, the owner of Final Touch Art Studio in town. Her painting will unfold from start to finish, during the event.
We are excited to kick off our first Art Exhibit in Cochrane, in the town where Carie Stock grew up and calls home. Final Touch Art Studio holds a special place in our heart, as this is where Carie and her Mom, Robyn, have been painting as a hobby for the past 15 years. Many art students who paint at Final Touch have contributed art pieces to the various Art Exhibits over the years as well. Owner, Sharon Kulhavy has been a long time supporter of Helping Families, often painting live at many of the Calgary Art Exhibits.
ABOUT OUR ART EXHIBIT’S
This is the first ever Cochrane Art Exhibit, but it’s not the first time Helping Families Handle Cancer has run this event. Since 2010, Helping Families has hosted 7 Art Exhibits in Calgary and 2 in Lethbridge Alberta.
To date the Calgary Art Exhibit has raised $166,241 through the 7 Art Exhibit’s it has held since 2010.
Lethbridge has held 2 Art Exhibits starting in 2016 and has raised $30,484.
We are looking forward to bringing this event to Cochrane community, and to surpass our total raised over the $200,000 mark.

ABOUT KATIE ZOMAR DAVIS
Katie was like any other 16-year-old, but on October 14, 2015 everything changed for her and her family. After being in the hospital for several days, they got the news they least expected, Katie had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many white blood cells). With two other siblings for her Mom to take care of, things were starting to pile up. Katie started Chemotherapy but had some complications with her health. The family had to move from their home in Cremona and relocate in Cochrane. Katie’s Mom, Heather Zomar, was driving back and forth from Cochrane to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. After being referred by a Social Worker from the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Helping Families Handle Cancer was able to help and alleviate some stress and pressure. We were able to provide monthly parking passes, gift cards for groceries, gas to help with the driving expenses and medical supplies that Katie needed for her time at home. Katie is now cancer free and is looking to help families by telling her story at the upcoming Art Exhibit. Katie is now 19 and wants to make up for lost time. She likes spending time with her horse and is now a respite worker.

They made a terrible journey a little bit easier. We had a couple less things to worry about when there were such bigger things at hand. Helping Families Handle Cancer is a not-for-profit organization that strives to alleviate some of the emotional and financial stress of childhood cancer by providing financial support to families in need who are battling cancer.
Helping Families Handle Cancer impacts families with financial assistance towards things like hospital parking, groceries, rent and utilities, so parents can direct their energy into caring for their child, instead of struggling to cover basic living expenses.
