Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha is a place of bliss and serenity.

27.08.2017 - 14:57

Simple but undeniable truth about suffering in life, its causes and Nirvana discovered by Buddha, spread as far as central Asia. However it was wiped out from the land of its origin because of feuding principalities. As per the Buddhist scriptures, Virudhaka the king of neighboring kingdom Kosala destroyed Shakya kingdom in vengeance. It is believed that 70,000 Shakyas were massacred at the place now known as ‘Sagarhawa’. Remaining of stupas built by their descendant have been found in the site.

Earliest people to visit and document what they saw were two Chinese pilgrims from 5th and 7th century. The place was already desolated. Stupas were erected at the places where important incidences in Buddha’s life took place. The places sounds like somewhat preserved until the pilgrimage of Chinese travelers. Things got worse after Muslim rule in 9th century and migration of Hindus. Many of the ruins turned into the mound on the top of which Hindu temples were built.

The exact birthplace of Buddha was marked by a stone over which people built a shrine. The shrine and markers stone have been recovered now with meticulous excavation. But for long time it was buried over layers of temple and their debris. The last temple that stood on the top of mound was known as Mayadevi temple from the mother of Buddha.

Thanks to Emperor Ashoka who visited the place in 248 BCE and erected a pillar with inscription recognizing the birthplace of Buddha. The pillar still stands next to the temple.
